NEWS: ERCOT proposes $1,500/MW incentive for legacy Texas storage to adopt grid stability support

ERCOT wants to pay legacy battery and renewable projects to upgrade inverters and boost grid stability. (ESS News)

  • Under new rules, only projects with interconnection agreements signed after April 1 must meet advanced grid support standards. The problem? That leaves a fleet of older, inverter-based resources—storage specifically—running grid-following inverters. And as Texas adds inverter-based generation at scale, grid-forming capability becomes important to frequency and voltage stability.

  • The terms: ERCOT’s concept proposal would create a voluntary retrofit pathway with a two-year implementation window. A one-time payment of $1,500/MW—up to $25M total—is contingent on maintaining 90%+ availability during the first year of operation.
