Planet Pulse: A rhythmic check in on climate change

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗲 - a curated sample of the week’s more interesting, important, or just amusing stories.

Happy Halloween to all.

You might think I would attempt to apply a “scary” theme to today’s edition of Planet Pulse, but that would have involved too much thinking. Besides, the news on climate change and clean technology is scary enough on its own. So much so that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find positive stories to cover.

My posts this week covering a recent University of Chicago Energy Policy Institute/Associated Press poll  on American attitudes toward climate change certainly couldn’t be described as upbeat. But it is what it is, and frankly, what the industry is currently experiencing was inevitable.

The significant growth that solar and wind enjoyed in the last 15 to 20 years was in large part a byproduct of a clean energy perfect storm: historically low interest rates, generous incentives, dramatic cost declines driven by China, and ample points to connect to the grid.

Interest rates are no longer low, incentives have declined or disappeared, costs have stabilized, and it’s getting increasingly more challenging to connect to the grid.

All were predictable, yet the industry chugged along assuming that the party would last forever.

Welcome to the real world where only the most capable survive. In some ways, the cleansing that will occur is a good thing because only the best companies and ideas will survive.

In any case, I did make an effort to find a couple of positive stories to cover. Included this week is home supply chain improvements, something that needed to be said, an eye-opening economic stat, and finally, a green, green shoot.

Tiny, but with potential
