Massive hydro facility in China breaks ground!
Earlier today, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, announced that construction on the massive Yarlung Tsangpo River hydro-power project has begun. When complete, the project will become the world’s largest hydroelectric facility, with expected annual output of 300 million megawatt hours (MWh) – that’s three times the power production of China’s operating Three Gorges Dam or about the same amount of electricity consumed by customers in New York and Pennsylvania in a given year. The project, consisting of five cascade hydro-power stations, totaling 60 gigawatts (GW), is expected to be complete within a decade at an estimated cost of $167bn USD. Wow!
