A few years ago, Energy Central created a Community Platform with the idea of connecting every power industry professional in a collaborative environment.  Our goal was to give professionals in the industry a way to share, learn, and connect.  Since that time, our communities have grown, engagement is at an all-time high, and we are seeing more and more collaboration and sharing.  Making all this happen is you!

We know there are plenty of places and ways in which you can stay up-to-date on what is happening in the utility industry, but what makes Energy Central unparalleled is the true sense of Community created by every one of you.  Whether you engage by contributing posts, sharing links, asking questions, adding your events to the EC calendar, conversing and debating issues in the comments section, or even just reading, it is your voice and your involvement that make Energy Central Communities thrive. So, thank you for that!

As we look back on a noteworthy year, the Energy Central Team wanted to recognize the members on Energy Central who went above and beyond—frequently sharing news and content, reliably starting conversations across the site, and providing genuinely high-value contributions.

Each day this week, we’ll be publishing an article highlighting the Top Voice of 2020 for each of our 6 Networks. As part of this recognition, we asked each of them to answer some quick questions to highlight the past year in the industry and give us more of an insight into their lives—I hope you enjoy!

So, without further ado, thank you and congratulations to the following Top Voices in the Generation Network in 2020!

Charley Rattan – Hydrogen & Offshore Wind Business Advisor and Trainer

What topics do you hope to read/write about more in 2021?

“I’ll be writing more on green hydrogen and offshore wind next year for EnergyCentral - with perhaps more emphasis on regeneration opportunities for ports and remote communities.”

What’s something that your fellow community members might not know about and would surprise them?

“I was a writer and television researcher and involved with some hard-hitting subjects. I went after Josef Mengele for example and interviewed some his survivors, I spoke with the former Mrs. Mengele. I recently helped Professor Marwell in his recent book and do gain a mention the credits”

When you’re not espousing thought leadership in the utility sector, what are your favorite ways to unwind and pass the time?

“I’m a qualified soccer referee, coach and radio commentator and enjoy kicking a ball around with my lad in the garden. Pre lockdown I was enjoying reffing and playing the relatively new ‘walking football.’”

Nicole Stricker – Science Communications Manager at Idaho National Laboratory

What has been the most interesting utility-focused story for you to follow this past year?

“I’ve enjoyed watching clean hydrogen demonstration projects coming to U.S. commercial nuclear power plants. The concept of integrated energy systems has been under intense study at the national labs for roughly a decade, and it’s gratifying to see these ideas finally getting tested demonstrated in the commercial world. They’re exciting because they could allow nuclear power plants to sell more than just electricity (especially when the grid is flush with renewables). Plus, hydrogen made by splitting water at nuclear plants can help lower the carbon footprint of industrial hydrogen customers.”

What’s something that your fellow community members might not know about and would surprise them?

“They might be surprised to know how many ways there are to work with the national laboratories. INL experts participate in everything from cooperative R&D to full-scale testing and demonstrations. Our scientists and engineers work with professionals in all industries, including developers, local governments, public and private utilities, and original equipment manufacturers. The Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear and the National Reactor Innovation Center were created to offer doorways into the national labs for nuclear energy innovators.”

When you’re not espousing thought leadership in the utility sector, what are your favorite ways to unwind and pass the time?

“I like to play in the great outdoors with our golden retriever. Idaho National Laboratory is in a gorgeous part of the intermountain west—Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are practically in our backyard. There are no major metropolitan areas nearby, so we have lots of wilderness to ourselves. In the summer I enjoy whitewater rafting, camping/hiking and rowing my fly-fishing friends down lazy rivers. In the winter we ski (downhill and cross country), snowshoe and soak in the area’s many natural hot springs.”

Laurent Segalen – CEO at Megawatt-X

What’s something that your fellow community members might not know about and would surprise them?

“I was a co-author of the first edition of the GhGProtocol 20 years ago and was present in the meeting that coined the terms: Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions.”

When you’re not espousing thought leadership in the utility sector, what are your favorite ways to unwind and pass the time?

“Sports. I am a glider. Tough to do during COVID times. I've been a skydiver and a skyglider. Nowadays, skiing and sailing remain my favorite extra-activities.”

Is there a post or exchange on Energy Central that you’re most proud of?

“With my co-host, Gerard Reid, we have promoted our Redefining Energy podcast. In 2019, we had 20,000 downloads; this year we will have 80,000! I believe that Energy Central has really helped us expand our audience. So, thanks again to Energy Central.”

Kent Knutson – Energy Market Specialist at Hitachi ABB Power Grids

Link to Kent’s Profile

What drives you to engage with your fellow Energy Central Community members on a regular basis?

“Having access to your widely read platform and being able to communicate original stories that convey real trends and analysis with power industry leaders and subject matter experts, are the driving reasons behind my participation in the Energy Central community.”

What topics do you hope to read/write about more in 2021?

“There are so many interesting topics evolving including the surge in hybrid solar/energy storage investment, technological advancements in green hydrogen, new longer duration batteries, eMobility, and enabling transmission projects – including everything from undersea cable to support offshore wind, to massive long-haul interconnection projects needed to optimize renewable power across grids.”

What’s something that your fellow community members might not know about you and would surprise them?

“I started my career working with a great group of people at a relatively small company, Resource Data International (RDI), developing some of the first commercially available competitive intelligence databases in the energy and electric power industry.  We experienced the evolution from mainframe computers, to desktop systems, to the internet without skipping a beat.  We set the stage for future products and services that are used widely today by energy and power industry companies across the globe.”

Congratulations once again to our Top Voices in the Generation Network, and thanks to all Energy Central Community Members for enabling the community and platform to thrive this year! And keep an eye out for the next Top Voices Articles to come later this week…
