What energy/utility theme of 2023 has most inspired you to connect with your peers at Energy Central?
Helping global power industry professionals to work better through your platform is great, as it is built to connect members with each other. Sharing our knowledge & experience for advancement of the power industry. This theme increases the visibility and understanding of issues and empowers communities to have their say over decisions that affect our lives, our towns, cities and neighborhoods during energy transition along sustainable transformation of utilities. I really enjoyed people building up around me and providing feedback on this platform, and took it as positive ground with empathy and integrity as set goals.
If you had to predict, what will be the hottest topic on Energy Central in 2024?Â
To me the hottest topic should be actionable policy recommendations for governments and the private sector issued during COP28 & discussing how to increase global renewable energy capacity to at least 11,000 GW, while also doubling annual average energy efficiency improvements along other action agenda objective for fast-tracking and orderly energy transition to keep 1.5 °C within reach.
Is there a post or exchange on Energy Central that you’re most proud of from the past year?
Writing on a complex topic like Commutation Failure in HVDC. Many utilities went through these painful events, and best designing and planning of power system could avoid this type of operational issues

If you had to predict, what will be the hottest topic on Energy Central in 2024?Â
Energy balancing using advanced technology will become a bright spot. Industry professionals will begin to recognize that electric vehicles can be used to stabilize the grid when overfrequency and underfrequency conditions occur.
What has been a highlight of your year, personally or professionally?Â
My personal highlight in 2023 was hiking in Spain and Italy, and touring Roman ruins with archeological graduate students.
My professional highlight was meeting with subject matter experts to understand their unique perspectives. This year, I met with environmental scientists who have an in depth understanding of vegetation ignition, transformer experts who understand heat loss and core flux, material scientists who can explain limitations of the Arrhenius equation, turbine experts who understand resonant frequencies of turbine blades, and others who fill in gaps in my knowledge base. There is so much to learn.
Do you have a ‘New Year’s Resolution’ for interacting with your peers and partners in the industry?
As a Life Senior Member of IEEE, one of my goals for 2024 is to become a mentor for members of the Portland State University Chapter of IEEE.
