Power System Operator - Generation

On-shift power system operators in the generation functional area are responsible for the real-time power marketing, generation scheduling, load forecasting and balancing of Platte River Power Authority’s (Platte River) resources and obligations in an economic, reliable and compliant manner. Power system operators work as part of a collaborative and cross-functional team across multiple areas both internally and externally.

Individuals in this role are under the direct supervision of the manager of generation dispatch and power markets and receive guidance from senior staff.


Essential duties and responsibilities

Individuals in the role must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodations, the essential functions of the job.

  • Coordinates and monitors generation resources to balance forecasted load, required reserves, and sales/purchase with other companies
  • Maximizes the utilization of available resources in an economic manner
  • Communicates generation outages/issues with neighboring reliability and marketing entities
  • Complies with applicable FERC Orders, NERC Reliability Standards, WECC Reliability Standards, regional procedures/criteria, and Platte River specific plans, procedures and contracts
  • Administers marketing contracts on a real-time basis
  • Supports management in the documentation and maintenance of current or emerging processes, policies and best practices, as well as provides input to a digital knowledge base of information acquired through training and research; maintains power marketing/generation scheduling related records; maintains documentation for HQ and power supply backup control centers
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all tools and processes provided to perform duties
  • Disseminates information regarding generation/market related events to management and necessary personnel
  • Successfully demonstrates key competencies for Platte River bulk electric system organization-specific reliability-related tasks
  • Assists senior power schedulers (day ahead) and other power market and generation dispatch employees
  • Performs successfully in periodic power system operator-generator training evaluations and demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities to enable independent performance of assignments
  • Works collaboratively with other transmission, generation and headquarters team members
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance
  • Works safely and demonstrates safe work practices
  • Provides generation on-the-job training for power system operator trainees
  • Performs other duties as assigned

This position has no supervisory or lead role responsibilities.


Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Working knowledge of power marketing and generation scheduling and real-time operations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to communicate technical information effectively
  • Strong mathematical aptitude and an ability to work with complex variables and factors when analyzing data and indicators
  • Proven ability to resolve complex issues and interpret policies, procedures and regulations; excellent analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to provide attention to detail and to meet deadlines with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness
  • Strong team skills and the ability to effectively work with others to provide solutions and resolution to complex problems
  • General knowledge of government regulations affecting electric utilities
  • Ability to work with individuals and groups at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, exhibit a positive approach and collaborate with others to provide a high level of service internally and externally
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills and an ability to complete work in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment

  • Strong proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word and Outlook

  • Ability to work 24-hour, 7-day-a-week office environment, on 12-hour rotating shifts and work hours in excess of an assigned workweek as needed
  • Ability to work safely and engage in safe work practices

 

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, energy or a related field is preferred; H.S. diploma or equivalent 
  • Current valid driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under Platte River’s vehicle liability policy 

 

Preferred qualifications

  • Three or more years of power marketing/generation scheduling experience
  • Current NERC certification or ability to obtain NERC certification


Bi-weekly salary range for this position (placement DOQ): $4.278 - $5,882

(if annualized, placement also DOQ: $111,216 - $152,928)
