The City of Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has an immediate opening for an Jr. Electrical Engineer. The BPU is a full service utility provider serving residents and businesses in Jamestown, N.Y. and surrounding communities with electric, water, wastewater, solid waste and district heating/chilling services.
Applicants must have graduated from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or have graduated from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate in Science Degree, with major in Engineering Science, Math or Physics and four years of full-time paid experience in Electrical Engineering work.
This is a professional technical engineering position that involves participation in the preparation of plans and estimates for construction and maintenance of pole lines, underground cabling systems, substations and street lighting projects. The person in this position will assist in the determination of sizes of wire, transformer capacities and rating of electrical protective devices associated with electrical distribution lines; provide engineering support to the operation and maintenance of high pressure steam boilers, turbo-generators and auxiliary equipment; review reports on power plant operations for potential improvements in operating efficiency; may confer with private power companies as to circuit requirements for making parallel connections; meet and work with customers and their contractors on installing new service.
The position requires a good knowledge of electrical engineering procedures and practices in the design, operation and maintenance of electrical transmission and distribution systems; good knowledge of the mechanical operation, maintenance and repair of high-pressure steam boilers, turbo-generators and associated auxiliaries; good knowledge of the care, use and adjustment of electrical testing and measuring instruments and equipment; good knowledge of mathematics, formulas, the properties of materials, elements of engineering research and engineering economics as related to electrical generation and distribution systems; good knowledge of the methods of electrical and mechanical controls for large-capacity power-generating machinery; ability to prepare specifications, direct drafting of plans and make recommendations for plant improvements and maintenance; ability to follow complex oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with ability to do the job.

The position of Jr. Electrical Engineer falls in the Competitive Class of the Civil Service Commission Classification Plan. All applicable rules and regulations of the New York State Civil Service Commission (including all local rules and regulations) shall apply to this position.
