In this job, you will serve within our REPS (Resource/Environment Planning and Strategies) organization.  You will lead the development and application of capacity expansion models and production cost simulation models that take into account market structure and conditions, generation resources including renewables and demand-side resources, and California/WECC transmission topology to build SCE’s integrated resource plan, and also you will work on energy, ancillary services, and capacity price forecast.  Your role will support SCE’s renewable energy procurement, integration and strategical initiatives, and transmission investments.  You will prepare presentations on the studies/ methodologies, the results/findings, and communicate with the senior management.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • Leading the development of production cost simulation models and methodologies that consider market structure and conditions, economic trends, all generation resources including renewables and demand-side resources, and transmission topology.  Assessing electricity system reliability in California.

  • Guiding development of our integrated resource plan to meet the California regulatory requirements.

  • Serving as the guide for sources of data and resources available to access information and will be accountable for the accuracy and integrity of findings and recommendations.

  • Operating, testing, maintaining, evolving, and developing quantitative forecasting, modeling and analysis tools, to produce data to support power procurement transactions, hedging, position management, regulatory reporting, in energy markets.

  • Continuing to develop and improve methodologies to support the market valuation of capacity, energy, Ancillary Services, and other products of interest to SCE.

  • Developing automated workflows to clean, manipulate and analyze datasets, and streamline the process.

  • Providing the resource plans to support resource planning, T&D planning and reliability study, financial reporting, and other activities.

  • Providing adequate the Quality Control and review the forecast/analysis work of junior staff.

  • Guiding and participating in the selection and implementation of Price Forecasting tools and fundamental simulation models.

  • Providing training in the use and improvement of fundamental models and price forecasting models to junior staff.

  • Guiding and coordinating the efforts to meet SCE’s new development and requirement needs.

  • You will regularly collaborate with IT personnel, consultants, and vendors in developing analytical tools and analysis for SCE’s activities.  Independently vet/validate consultant methodology and provide feedback to internal and external stakeholders.

The essentials

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or related discipline.

  • 7 years of experience with power system modeling and/or electricity market.

  • Experience with power systems, and/or Independent System Operator (ISO) markets.

The preferred

  • Graduate Degree in Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a STEM discipline.

  • Five (5) or more years of experience building, analyzing, maintaining complex production cost simulation/unit dedication, optimization, or power system modeling in the LMP or energy markets.

  • Experience with commercial production cost simulation models.

  • Experience with power system market operations, operational planning, trading, and/or analysis of energy markets.

  • Understanding of Economic theory and experience of forecasting, planning, and analyzing market trends.

  • Experience in using data skills leveraging languages like SQL, Python, R, and other tools to provide solutions to process large data sets.

  • Experience in the energy markets or working in a utility environment.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), or other ISO market design.

  • Experience researching information, analyzing it, preparing reports, and making recommendations.

  • Experience developing and delivering technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Experience completing multiple projects concurrently while adjusting to changing priorities.

  • Experience interfacing and collaborating with clients, peers, management, and other departments.

  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and able to learn quickly.

  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to follow Edison safety protocols and safe work practices.
