Primary Purpose:  

This position is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, patching, troubleshooting, and developing SDG&E's Energy Management System (EMS) software. The EMS is used by Grid Control Center staff to monitor and control SDG&E's Bulk Electric System. Servers are distributed over 4 different environments: Production, QA, Dev, and Training. Production servers are continuously monitored and require 24x7 support to ensure high system availability, reliability, and compliance with NERC CIP requirements. The candidate will be part of the EMS administration team, provisioning/revoking EMS access, adhering to CIP standards, addressing system issues, EMS patch management, EMS vendor interaction, enhancing system monitoring through automation, participate in day-to-day operations, system integration and EMS upgrades, SCADA database updates, and will be interfacing with several outside departments. This position requires participation in a 24x7 on-call rotation within 6 months and occasional travel.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Performs all or part of software patching and software release upgrades to ensure high system availability and reliability, as well as NERC CIP-002 through CIP-009 compliance. Manage and monitor EMS access; conduct daily evaluations of EMS real-time control systems operations in order to maximize system performance; communicate and coordinate with the dispatchers, engineers, Electric Control Technicians, and field crews; perform troubleshooting, problem analysis and resolution.
  • Enhances EMS monitoring automation and notifications through the development of custom scripting and program development.
  • Manages and works on small EMS/SCADA/WASA related projects from inception to completion, with minimum supervision. Establish, troubleshoot, and maintain ICCP data transfer to various external entities and SCADA real-time RTU telemetry. Maintain, update, and provide support to the Power System Applications such as SE and CA; Dispatcher Training System (DTS); PI interfaces, PI tags, and various PI ProcessBook and PI Vision displays to ensure that the SDG&E Transmission Control Center Operators are provided with the necessary tools to reliably operate the SDG&E transmission grid.
  • Works with the SDG&E Grid Control Team to incorporate the necessary EMS/SCADA/ICCP database updates/changes. Works with the RTU Technicians to point-to-point SCADA ensure that the field RTUs correctly communicates with the EMS/SCADA.
  • Works with the Mission Control Training Team to ensure DTS is update to date with production snapshots. Ensure proper simulation, assist with event/scenario building, troubleshoot issues with simulator, and development of new features as requested.
  • Actively participates in cross-training for all integrated real-time control systems, maintains software documentation library and updates internal operating procedures.
  • Works with other staff as a team when necessary; keeps others informed of system changes, updates and programs that impact the real-time control systems.
  • Participates in Company-wide efforts to integrate data communication networks to provide power system data to company's internal staff, other utility companies and California ISO.
  • Keeps up with the latest developments in the utility industry, to meet NERC, FERC or WECC standards and regulatory requirements, and California deregulation requirements.
  • Takes part in the required 24x7 support weekly rotation with other team members, acting as a central point of contact for all off-hours EMS software related issues reported by Grid Control Staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent, preferably in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information System, or Mathematics.
  • Requires a minimum of three years of experience related to Energy Management Systems/SCADA, software development, and operational support of real-time control systems.
  • Ability and skills to solve complex problems required.
  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience on supporting distributed (client/server environment) computer system is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of Power Systems highly desirable.
  • Background in software development in C, C++, Java or other languages is highly desirable. Working knowledge of SQL language is also highly desirable. Successful candidate will participate in 24x7 on-call duties as necessary.
  • Working knowledge of Unix/Linux Shell scripting is highly desirable.
