Calistoga, CA, swapped its seasonal diesel generators for a first-of-its-kind hydrogen microgrid from Energy Vault, Plug Power, and PG&E, built to keep the 5K-person town powered during wildfire-driven grid shutoffs. (Canary Media)
The 293 MWh system combines an 80K-gallon liquid hydrogen tank, 8 MW of fuel cells, and a small battery for black start capability. It can run the town for 48 hours and refuel on the fly for longer outages.
