NEWS: Floating offshore the next frontier for data centers

Developers are turning to the ocean to solve land and power shortages for data centers, with two floating projects underway in Japan. (Smart Energy International)

  • NYK Line, NTT Facilities, and their partners plan to demo a containerized, solar-and-battery-powered data center this fall at Yokohama’s Osanbashi pier to test resilience to saltwater corrosion.

  • Long term, the goal is full-scale offshore facilities powered by offshore wind, bypassing onshore grid constraints.

  • Meanwhile, Karpowership subsidiary Kinetics and Mitsui Lines will retrofit a 120m vessel into a 20–70 MW floating data center that could be deployed in a year—less than half the time of traditional builds.
