Houston will get a new natural gas plant next summer, backed by a $216M low-interest loan from the Texas Energy Fund. (Houston Chronicle)
The project will expand NRG’s TH Wharton Generating Station to supply the ERCOT Houston Load Zone with new dispatchable capacity.
Between the lines: It’s the largest award yet from the state program created in 2021 to boost grid reliability after Winter Storm Uri. The fund has faced hurdles, with nearly 5 GW of projects denied or withdrawn, but NRG has two more plants under review that could bring its total fund-supported capacity to 1.5 GW by 2028.
