NEWS: NERC overstates reliability risks in long-term assessment: Grid Strategies

NERC is ringing the alarm about looming power outages, but a new report argues they’re stacking the deck to make the crisis look worse. (Utility Dive)

  • For context: NERC recently warned that most of North America faces elevated risks of blackouts over the next five years—a dire forecast the Trump administration is wielding to justify keeping legacy fossil plants online.

  • Now, the consulting firm Grid says NERC is skewing the data. For one, this projection ignores the massive backlog of renewable projects currently waiting to connect to the grid.

  • NERC also assumes an unchecked 90 GW spike in data center demand, ignoring major real-world bottlenecks and AI skepticism, and discounts the emergency interstate power sharing.
