NEWS: How data centers can learn to turn off and help the grid

Big Tech may finally be ready to turn off their data centers (at least sometimes). (E&E News)

  • Earlier this year, a Duke study (yes, that Duke study) found data centers could add nearly 100 GW of new load if they turned down their power demand for less than 44 hours every year. Last month, MIT researchers pegged cost savings from flexibility at up to 5% in Texas.

  • Now? Grid operators are taking note: SPP plans to fast-track hookups for data centers that agree to curtail or bring their own backup power, and PJM is weighing similar rules.
