Florida Power & Light says years of grid hardening are paying off as restoration times plummet. (Palm Beach Post)
The state’s largest utility has replaced or reinforced nearly all its major infrastructure: 96% of transmission structures are now steel or concrete, and 82% of main distribution lines are hardened or underground.
Average restoration time after major hurricanes has fallen from 5.4 days after Wilma (2005) to ~8 hours after Idalia (2023)—a dramatic improvement for a state still facing some of the nation’s toughest weather risks.
