MISO’s $22B transmission buildout is under fire. (Utility Dive)
A complaint from five state commissions is asking FERC to overturn approval of 24 long-range projects, putting billions in grid investment and reliability upgrades at risk.
For context: Tranche 2.1, approved by MISO’s board in December, contains 24 transmission projects, including some that form a 3,631-mile, 765-kV backbone. The projects are expected to go online from 2032 to 2034
Supporters of the complaint—including industrial customer groups and MISO’s market monitor—argue the grid operator overstated benefits and underestimated costs.
Opponents—from MISO itself to Midwest regulators, Ameren, Xcel, AES Indiana, and data center advocates—say reversing the portfolio would delay critical lines, undermine interconnection studies, and jeopardize reliability.
