Now, you might be wondering what I’m talking about in this community… but hold on! My first encounter with ‘Corona’ was actually back in my B.Tech (Electrical Engineering days).

Let me refresh my learning—and maybe yours too—about Corona in transmission lines.”** ⚡😉

 ⚡ Corona Loss in Transmission Lines

Definition:
Corona loss is the energy dissipated in a transmission line due to the corona effect—the electrical discharge caused by ionization of surrounding air when the electric field around the conductor exceeds a critical limit.


🌐 Corona Effect

  • Ionization of Air:
    At high voltages, the strong electric field around conductors ionizes nearby air molecules, forming a plasma region.

  • Visible & Audible Signs:
    This shows up as a bluish-violet glow around conductors and produces a hissing/buzzing noise.

  • Ozone Production:
    The discharge creates ozone (O₃), which can accelerate conductor corrosion and cause interference with communication lines.


🔎 Consequences of Corona Loss

  1. Energy Loss:
    Part of the electrical energy is wasted as heat and light, reducing system efficiency.

  2. Radio & Communication Interference:
    Corona generates high-frequency disturbances, affecting nearby telecommunication lines.

  3. Conductor Damage:
    Continuous corona can corrode conductors due to ozone and chemical by-products.

How to avoid

-Use Corona rings (distribute electric field).

-Increase conductor size (reduces surface electric field).

-Increase spacing between conductors (lowers electric stress)
