NEWS: Energy startups raise big bucks to go to bat against incumbents

Today in startup news: An aircraft startup is launching natural gas turbines for data centers, while a heat pump startup tops $50M in funding.

  • Boom Supersonic, a company mostly known for building a supersonic aircraft, just raised $300M to build and sell a version of its turbine engine as a stationary power plant. Its first customer? Data center startup Crusoe, which will buy 29 of Boom’s 42-MW turbines for $1.25 billion to generate 1.21 GW for its data centers.

  • Heat pump startup Quilt announced a $20M Series B to expand its footprint of well-designed, customizable, data-driven heat pumps. The company, which is contending with some well-funded incumbents in the heat pump space, has installed almost 1,000 units across the US and Canada.
