Duke Energy just filed its first long-term plan since North Carolina lawmakers scrapped the 2030 carbon target. (WUNC)
Instead of racing toward offshore wind or a second Bad Creek hydro unit, Duke is delaying both into the 2040s while keeping coal and gas plants running longer. At the same time, it’s nearly doubling planned battery storage and lining up 12 new gas plants.
Emissions would actually rise into the mid-2030s, peaking at ~60M tons before falling as new solar and nuclear come online later.
