Alphabet is acquiring clean energy developer Intersect Power for $4.75B. (CNBC)
The goal is vertical integration. By owning the developer, Google can bypass the traditional bottleneck of waiting for third parties to build power plants. The plan is to build co-located sites where the solar farm and the data center are constructed simultaneously on the same plot of land.
The move is a direct response to the staggering scale of the competition. OpenAI has reportedly locked in $1.4T in infrastructure commitments over the next eight years, forcing Google to scramble for speed and capacity.
