Late last week, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved an order granting the authorization application to charge negotiated rates on SouthWestern Power Group’s (SWPG) high-voltage alternating-current (HVAC) RioSol Transmission Project. When energized, the estimated $2.4 billion investment, will span about 550 miles across New Mexico and Arizona. Construction is expected to start in 2026 with completion in 2028. The alternating current power line will allow for interconnection of both electrical generation and electrical users at any point along the transmission line. The RioSol line will run next to the currently under-construction 550-kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) SunZia transmission line. SWPG (owned by MMR Group) sold the SunZia project to Pattern Energy Group in 2022. Hitachi Energy’s HVDC Light® technology and MACH™ digital control platform was selected for the project. SunZia is expected to be up and running by December 2025.
