Is Data Streaming / Transferring via Data Diodes real-time?

Usecase : we need to  feed and SIEM with OT/ICS events, in order to detect threats in time we need to have real-time events

Asked by: - Cybersecurity Consultant

This question was posed during a recent Energy Central PowerSession: Data Diodes 101: Protecting the Grid with Hardware

The PowerSession was so lively and packed with great information that the panelists were not able to address all the questions live, so we thought we would bring the question into the community. By posting the question in the community, anyone can follow the Q&A and or even participate.

I can add that latency through a data diode depends on the specific protocol that is used and the level of filtering or validation that the diode is performing. Typically, the latency through a diode is on the order of milliseconds.

Yes, it is as real time as the bandwidth of the diode that you purchase. For example, when streaming PI or OPC data with a 100 megabit diode you will get the speed of a 100 megabit network connection minus any delays created by interfaces on the trusted side of the diode.
