First of all, we want to wish a happy Veterans Day to all veterans in our community and thank them (and the family of veterans, as well) for their dedicated service. Honoring our veterans is close to the heart of the Energy Central team, and the utility sector is a notable landing spot for men and women after they leave the service, so we thought it only appropriate to celebrate this Veterans Day by highlighting some of those utility professionals who came from backgrounds in the military.

Over the course of this past week, we published interview articles with 5 of our esteemed veterans in the Energy Central Community:

As we all take a moment to pause and reflect on the hard work and sacrifice of our veterans, and what that means for the rest of us, I encourage you to check out the above interviews to see some of the common themes that come with moving from the military to a career in utilities. You'll see multiple of our interviewees discuss the military's training on leadership and decision making and how that becomes critical in the power industry, the ability to quickly and effectively learn new technologies on the fly, and the type of focus and reliability that gets instilled in servicemembers that also creates the best type of leaders in the utility sector.

So anyone who is hiring, training, or looking towards the next generation of utility professionals, take heed of the interviews above and recognize how valued veterans could be to your team!

And we don't want the conversation to end there, so we're asking you to participate in the following:

  • Our interviewees invite you to leave questions and comments on their interviews about their perspective on being a veteran now working in energy.
  • If you or someone on your team is a veteran, we invite you to share their story via a post on Energy Central, and be sure to use our Veterans Day 2021 topic tag so others will find it.
  • Please also feel free to use the comments below to highlight your thoughts and questions about this important topic.

Thanks once again to all our veterans in the community-- Happy Veterans Day!
