In this piece, Gian Schelling, Business Development Manager, Renewables at Hitachi Energy recommends maximizing the value of operating expenses (OPEX) rather than focusing on total KWh volume to optimize earnings for onshore wind production. He suggests maximizing the financial yield per KWh produced by understanding how to maintain wind turbines so maximum energy yield is available when the energy is being offtaken at the best prices, understanding short- and medium-term energy market price developments, and maximizing the profitability of energy trading. Here, staffers at the Electricity Markets and Policy (EMP) Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab announce the publication of a new article in the journal Wind Energy, which the Lab contributed to. The article outlines opinions from more than 140 experts on their expectations for wind turbine and plant design in 2035. This information can inform today’s investment, research, and energy planning decisions. Key findings include the expected size and location of wind turbines, grid system value enhancement options, and potential constraining influences.

In this article, Andrew Blakers, Professor of Engineering at Australian National University explains that a viable solution already exists to address the challenge of very large-scale storage needed to manage variable solar and wind generation. It is pumped hydro energy storage (PHES). He points out that this technology is already affordable and available, making it usable now for terawatt-scale deployment.
