Here is a sample of some of the interesting findings we are seeing across the markets:

ERCOT: Despite two Energy Emergency Alert notifications in the summer of 2019, market outcomes driven by higher intermittent renewable resource production (on peak demand days) and resource performance (outpaced historical patterns) supported reliability needs. ABB expects the low reserve margin situation (well below the 13.75% target) to continue in the short term.

WECC: Expect higher renewables, more energy storage and accelerated coal retirement schedules.

Northeast: New York state raised the bar on climate action and codified aggressive targets for higher renewables, offshore wind, and behind-the-meter solar resources. These changes resulted in lower MCPs in the long-term.

Midwest: New Jersey’s incorporation into RGGI increases MCPs by up to 10%.

Southeast: In the Southeast we find deferred access to low-cost Utica/Marcellus shale with delays to Mountain Valley (MVP) and Atlantic Coast pipelines.

Hawaii: Hawaii Electric Company is seeking an additional 900 MWs of renewable energy in the second phase of their renewable energy procurement.

Mexico: Expect to see continued investment in natural gas combined cycle power plants along with solar and wind generation by CENACE.
