US DoE Funding Atkins for Technology Development for High-Capacity Floating Offshore Wind Turbines

SNC-Lavalin Groups Atkins has been selected to receive USD 1.56 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energys Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy. The funding will be used to develop and implement scale model experiments for conventional and unconventional floating offshore wind turbine concepts, providing the industry a strategic technological advance toward commercial viability. Atkins is at the forefront of the offshore renewable revolution, providing concept and detailed engineering design, owners engineering services, as well as technical advice on emerging clean energy technologies. Accessible offshore wind is estimated at more than 25 quadrillion BTUs per year, with more than half of that resource blowing across water too deep to be economically feasible given the turbine capacity of current offshore wind turbine designs. The new concepts in the ARPA-E project could enable access to unused wind resources, enabling greater production and market access for offshore wind energy. The DOE funding will help Atkins develop technology that could support high-capacity (15 megawatt) wind turbines, which could increase cost competitiveness of offshore wind as an energy resource.
