Unscrubbed coal plants either need to be brought up to current technology or shut down.  Clean coal plants need to remain in operation as there will be a shortage.  Renewables are not in a position to handle the load and may never be.  Storage will be a problem in itself as the technology is infantile and dangerous.

Countries that have gone this route and additionally closed their nuclear plants and gas turbines are struggling to provide power for the users and many times import it from their neighbors and it is genetated by unscrubbed coal plants. A word of caution.
