SSEN Transmission statement on today's publication of BEIS' Electricity Networks Strategic Framework

  • Aug 5, 2022
ENP Newswire

We note today's publication of BEIS' Electricity Networks Strategic Framework, which aims to build upon the British Energy Security Strategy's commitments for grid infrastructure and set out a strategic framework for the transformation of the electricity network to support Net Zero.

In response, Rob McDonald, Managing Director of SSEN Transmission stated: 'We welcome that the role of the GB electricity network in the UK's decarbonisation journey is formally recognised within the Electricity Networks Strategic Framework, and support commitments to accelerate delivery of critical networks infrastructure.

'Significant investment in the GB electricity transmission network, at scale and pace, will be vital to meet the UK's legally binding Net Zero goals, support delivery of 50GW of offshore wind by 2030 and ensure a robust and resilient home grown energy supply at the most efficient cost for consumers. Supporting a just transition, this investment will also create opportunities for UK supply chain investment, benefits for host communities and unlock good, green, skilled jobs for a low carbon economy.

'Realising this ambition by 2030 will require certainty for future network growth and a step change to the current regulatory project approval approach; supported by government policy which enables critical network investment. We will continue to engage with BEIS, Ofgem, Scottish Government and other affected stakeholders as the commitments outlined within the Framework progress to support delivery of its objectives and unlock a robust, resilient and green network for Net Zero in the north of Scotland.'
