Solar panels can become cyclone missiles

TERRITORY homeowners embracing renewable energy are being warned to make sure their systems can handle the tropical climate and conform to specific requirements.

NT WorkSafe senior electrical safety inspector Reg Dwyer said there has been a boom in the installation of rooftop solar systems in the Territory, the only place where the number has consistently increased year on year.

Mr Dwyer said that because the Top End is in a cyclone region, the Territory has specific requirements for Solar PV installations to make sure they don’t become missiles during a cyclone.
