There are many types of Lithium batteries from each automaker. The key to long life of the battery is Battery Management Systems with liquid cooling. Some like Nissan LEAF still haven't added liquid cooling or any BMS and their batteries lose capacity 10 times faster than any other Electric Vehicle. So you would get little 2nd life from these very poorly engineered battery packs.

The best thing to do would be to use the bester designed battery packs while they are active and in use. V2G Vehicle To GRID can do that. By taking just a small 10% from the battery is actually tickles the cells and makes the battery better. The University Of Delaware has been doing a demo project on this for over 8 years.
