Most of Pakistan plunged in darkness as power outage hits

Japan Economic Newswire

Most of Pakistan was hit by a power outage overnight due to a fault at a thermal power plant in the south, with the country working to restore electricity supply on Sunday.

Energy minister Omar Ayub Khan said at a news briefing that a fault at the Guddu power plant in Sindh Province late Saturday night had caused power plants elsewhere to shut down, leading to the massive blackout.

The outage hit at 11:41 p.m., leaving most of the country without electricity for hours. Water supply was affected in parts of the country, according to local media.

Khan said power supply to many cities including Islamabad had been restored.
