Milestone: Wind Power Accounts for Largest Share of Electricity Generation at 27.2%, Wind Power Shares Post Price Gains of up to 205 %

M2 PressWIRE

- 27.2% of Germany's energy generation comes from wind power

- Gross electricity generation from wind power increased from 39 to 132.8 terawatt hours since 2010

- 42% of investors believe that sustainable investments lead to higher returns

- Price gains of 205% within one year for companies in the wind energy industry

- With Enercon and Nordex, two German companies among major players in the wind power sector

Wind energy contributed 27.2% of total electricity generation in Germany last year. This made it the largest single source of energy. This is shown in a new infographic from Since 2010, gross electricity generation from wind power in Germany has risen from 39 terawatt hours to 132.8 terawatt hours. This trend not only benefits the climate, but also the shareholders of companies in the wind energy sector.

Coal-based energy generation now only accounts for the second-largest share, with 24.3%. Due to the trend towards sustainability, the proportion of renewable energies is likely to continue to rise in the coming years.

The proportion of photovoltaic systems in total energy production is also growing: 10.6% of Germany's total electricity generation is attributable to solar. However, the gains for wind power have been even greater. Two German companies, Enercon and Nordex, are among the major players in the wind power and wind turbine manufacturing sector.

Within the renewable energy sector, onshore wind power accounts for almost 42% and offshore wind power for about 11%. Alongside solar modules, green energy is also increasingly supplemented by biomass and hydropower.

The shift is also causing a buzz on the stock exchange floor. Today, 42% of investors are convinced that sustainable investments lead to even higher returns. Recent history seems to prove them right: while the DAX has risen by just 5.5% over the past year, the price of shares in companies from the wind energy sector have gained up to 205%. The German Nordex Group also posted a gain of 122% over the same period.

"Just a few years ago, many still believed that renewable energies could only ever make a small contribution to total electricity generation," adds Block-Builders analyst Raphael Lulay. "Current developments are demonstrating emphatically that this is not the case".
