Hydrogen isn't the fuel of the future. It's already here

World Economic Forum

Many of us see hydrogen as an energy source of the future. However, proven large-scale and low-emission hydrogen production is already here - and it can help kickstart the energy transiti......

Nope, hydrogen is the fuel of the past - the 19th century, to be exact.
For over a decade, Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell, and other global oil companies have been disingenuously pushing the use of hydrogen as a clean fuel, conveniently forgetting to mention it will be produced from fossil methane ("natural gas") - conveniently sidestepping the fact that in production it will produce even more carbon emissions than gasoline before it ever gets near a fuel tank.
Sorry that your 50,000+ gas stations will end up as convenience stores, but energy-aware customers ain't buying it. And there's always money to be made selling bad donuts and coffee.

Hydrogen is made from either charcoal gasification, steam methane (NG) or electricity, the latter by "cracking water with electrons" as they say. So Bob Meinetz is accurate in a number of ways about Big Oil and Gas motivation of emphasis on hydrogen. Given what appears to be a slow transition to an all-electric economy, why hydrogen when grid power can supply electricity fuel for EVs? How long before the electric utility industry fully engages in the realization they can be in transportation fuel supply business with EVs and displacing to whatever degree oil as in gasoline for internal combustion engines? Why yet another solution as in hydrogen adding more cost and efficiency delays? The counterclaim will most likely be the cost of the technology and its not big enough as in the same old tired arguments resisting an inevitable energy transition.

Good points/questions Robert. Anyone who believes hydrogen currently represents any kind of environmental solution should read Joseph Romm's book, The Hype About Hydrogen
