Stephen Mushegan is a Manager at RMI (formerly Rocky Mountain Institute) on the Building Electrification program. In this role, he oversees the Northeast regional team, which engages with states and cities to tackle a significant piece of the US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions puzzle: direct emissions from buildings. Seventy million homes and businesses across the country burn natural gas, oil, or propane onsite to heat space and water and cook food, generating 600 million tons of CO2 each year—a tenth of total US emissions (not including methane leakage). He continues to build relationships with local stakeholders, including policymakers, NGOs, utilities and others to disseminate information on the economics, carbon, health, and air quality impacts of moving from natural gas to electrification, and to provide analysis to support local campaigns to electrify buildings.
