Position Summary
Xcel Energy is seeking a data science intern who is ready to apply their strong critical thinking, modeling, and data visualization skills in Strategic Workforce Planning (SWP), enabling the company to meet current and future organizational goals. The data science intern will assist with enhancing existing workforce planning models and contribute to the development of new models, approaches, and methods using machine learning and other techniques.

We are looking for analytical thinkers that can quickly get a feel for our data and work with minimal direction. We want you to bring fresh ideas to our team and help us to improve our processes.

Through this internship, you will benefit from shadowing, mentoring, and training opportunities with experienced and accomplished data scientists and analysts. You will gain exposure working on collaborative projects with multiple stakeholders and significant business impact.
  • The candidate is expected to work around 15-20 hours a week during academic periods, with the ability to work additional hours during non-academic periods.
  • This is currently a remote/work-from-home position with expectations of occasionally working out of the St Cloud, Minneapolis, or Denver office.


Minimum Requirements
A successful candidate must be
  • Pursuing a degree in STEM, Business Analytics, Data Science, Economics, Statistics, or similar technical program
  • Familiar with R
  • Able to collaborate in a team environment
  • Entering Junior year or greater

A successful candidate has experience in
  • Influencing others using creative data visualization techniques
  • Applying appropriate statistical techniques to data exploration

Preferred Requirements
  • Have prior experience in or a willingness to learn natural language processing (NLP)
  • Have prior experience using simulation software
