Job Summary and Essential Functions

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state. The NYISO's Interconnection Projects department invites applications for a full-time Senior Planning Engineer, Facility Studies.

The Senior Planning Engineer will coordinate, perform, and review technical studies related to the interconnection of proposed new generation, transmission and load facilities to the New York State transmission system (i.e., interconnection projects). Particularly responsible for coordinating, performing, and reviewing technical studies related to Facility Studies for Large and Small Generation, and Transmission interconnections; however, may perform or assist in other interconnection/planning studies as required. The Senior Planning Engineer will also provide high level technical guidance to System & Resource Planning colleagues and other departments as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field required with a concentration in power systems preferred; Master's Degree desired.
  • A minimum of five years of power system planning and/or design experience is required for the Senior Engineer level.
  • Knowledge of reliability standards and practices related to power system planning and design.
  • Knowledge of advanced studies including SSR, EMTP and power quality type studies.
  • Experience with power system software applications, models and databases (e.g., power flow, short circuit, dynamics, etc ...) used in transmission planning or an equivalent of education, training and experience is necessary.
  • It is desirable to have knowledge of: software tools (e.g., Siemens PTI PSS/e, PowerGEM TARA, Aspen Oneliner or equivalent); FERC, NERC, NPCC, NYSRC and/or NY Transmission Owner planning criteria requirements; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Candidates who possess Associate level (less than 2 years of experience) or Engineer Level (at least 2 years of experience) skills and qualifications are also encouraged to apply.
