Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Senior Nuclear Facility Research Engineer.

Responsibilities Include:
The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for a Senior Nuclear Facility Research Engineer reporting to the Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) Engineering Department Manager.
INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. The Space Nuclear Power and Isotope Technologies (SNPIT) division of the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to provide of Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) in support of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) missions.
The Senior Nuclear Research Facility Engineer applies engineering knowledge, practice, and techniques to solve applied and operational problems in the area of radioisotope power systems. Key functions of the role:
  • Creates engineering designs, drawings, specifications, implementation documents and performs analyzes to meet customer's design inputs
  • Responsible to define requirements and develop concept by communicating with the customer to understand customer requirements and identify goals
  • Develops work packages to include negotiating schedule with customers, cost estimates and request resources to support work
  • Complete and document details design to include confirmation code compliance, issuing design documents, developing materials and parts lists, inspection plans, etc.
  • Present and/or participate in design review including qualification testing on prototypes and perform calculations to support designs
  • Support procurement of materials, equipment and services, and support close-out of project phases
  • Provide technical coordination across multi-discipline teams for RPS activities
  • Routinely participate in development and delivery of technical and programmatic reports and presentations that support RPS programs
  • Responsible to mentor more junior engineers


Minimum Requirements:
  • Advanced Degree and 6 years of experience
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship
Preferred Requirements:
  • Advance degree (MS or PhD) and more than 9 years relevant experience
  • Degree in Materials Science or Materials Engineering is preferred
  • Considerable knowledge of engineering and safety standards, engineering materials, fabrication practices and equipment design is required
  • Must have good technical communication skills and considerable creativity and skill in conceiving and designing innovative solutions for specialized radiological equipment and support systems
  • Good skill in preparing the design specifications, estimating the cost, and managing the installation and/or construction of components and systems
  • High Temperature Graphite, Thermoelectric Materials, Nuclear Materials Experience, Space Related Experience

  • Salary Grade 230 ($118,020 - $200,808)/240 ($135,816 - $230,904)
