The Hydrogen and Electrochemistry Department within the Energy and Environment Science & Technology (EES&T) Directorate at Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a dedicated Research Mechanical Design Engineer with experience in high temperature hydrogen, chemical fuels, or fuel cell systems. This posting will assist to perform extended electrolysis tests of short and full electrolysis stacks to verify performance, including current density and durability, as well as to assist in the design and fabrication of complete portable hydrogen electrolysis systems that can be deployed to industrial partners for commercial demonstrations. This work may include designing thermal distribution systems for industrial partners to transfer steam and heat between high temperature systems.

Responsibilities:
- Perform design engineering and participate in physical tests using highly specialized equipment/instruments operated at varying temperatures with flammable gases;
- Provide engineering oversight and technical direction for assigned process systems and equipment which directly support hydrogen generation R&D and programmatic work within the Department;
- Maintain equipment/ instrument design basis and configuration;
- Write and perform qualification and operational tests for assigned instruments/equipment;
- Develop innovative ways to perform tasks/activities in a remote environment;
- Interact with Researchers to develop equipment/systems to accomplish research activities;
- Support maintenance activities for assigned equipment/instruments;
- Collect, assimilate, interpret and then report technical data via numerous media as required to meet programmatic goals;
- Act as a team member supporting and coordinating ongoing tasks;
- Influence programmatic direction with sound opinions on technical issues;
- Participate in writing proposals, project costing, and business plan development;
- Interact with other technical personnel as well as mission support staff from other organizations;
- Contribute to the development of new capabilities and intellectual property;
- Perform system engineering functions vital to support operation and research;
- Provide mentoring and guidance to junior staff members;
- Perform tasks on an independent basis with little mentorship.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- The candidate must have a MS or PhD Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Experience and proven technical understanding, and research collaborations.
- Professional recognition through an established record of publication and/or patents record in the design and testing of high temperature systems and equipment that handle flammable gases.
- Expertise in Solidworks or Autodesk Inventor, Labview, VBA, ChemCAD, Python
- Salary Grade PR0100 - 190 ($70,680 - $116,616) PR0200 - 200 ($81,288 - $134,100)
