Responsibilities Include:
In response to the nation's challenge to develop and validate 5G security protocols and data protection technologies, Idaho National Laboratory has established the INL Wireless Security Institute (WSI). The Institute's mission is to lead and coordinate government, academic, and private industry research efforts fostering more secure and reliable 5G wireless technology. The institute draws on INL's extensive expertise and unique facilities that have been used for nearly two decades to analyze, design, test, and improve cellular, radio, and satellite communication systems for government agencies and global wireless communication companies.
  • The Communications & Modeling Department at Idaho National Laboratory is hiring for a principal researcher to support INL's Wireless Security Institute (WSI).
  • Working closely with the WSI director to identify research opportunities to support the WSI's mission.
  • Supporting ongoing activities related to research, analysis, assessment, programming, deployment, testing, and training on 5G cellular networks and other communications systems existing at the INL.
  • Leading research teams to identify and mitigate wireless (primarily 5G and beyond) security vulnerabilities.
Minimum Requirements:
  • PhD plus 6 years relevant experience
Preferred degree fields include Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, and Computer Information Systems.
  • Deep understanding and hands-on validated experience with Linux operating systems and command line execution. Day-to-day hands-on exposure within the Linux environment should require minimal reference to book or online sources.
  • Hands-on shown experience, with minimal reference to other sources, programming and scripting with Python and C/C+.
  • Skill to automate tasks, build and troubleshoot scripts and programs; build, and perform testing on tools and methods.
  • Must have exposure to and understanding of packet analysis, malware, exploits, and general Red Team related functions.
  • Must have prior research lead experience focused in wireless security research.
  • Proven track record identifying activities and lead research activities resulting in technical presentations and publication in reputable wireless security conferences and publications.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

  • Salary Grade 240 ($139,488 - $237,144)/250 ($160,440 - $272,724)
