Position Description
The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a well-qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the Thermal Fluid Systems Methods and Analysis Department. This postdoctoral researcher will focus on developing (a) solver capabilities for molten salt and liquid metal reactors and (2) improvements to our current fluid surface interaction methodology.
The candidate is expected to be a strong asset to our research and development team, which consists of analysts and developers for the RELAP5-3D system code and openFOAM/STAR-CCM+ CFD codes. The candidate must work well in a team environment and be effective when working alone. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and take initiative, but will also incorporate direction from team members.
This position requires presentation of research results to INL departments/programs and writing scientific manuscripts for journal publication and technical conferences and meetings.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or similar field with a focus on computational fluid dynamics, received within the previous 5 years
  • Experience with numerical methods, and modeling and simulation tools for turbulent and/or high-speed flows using large-eddy or direct numerical simulation techniques.
  • Experience with Python, C++, and/or Fortran95 programming.
  • Experience with multiphase CFD, commercial and open source CFD codes requiring user-defined function development and use, and complex mesh generation
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills in English
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams
Desired Skills
  • Experience with CFD applied to commercial nuclear reactors
  • Experience with CFD modeling of liquid metal, molten salts, and non-water fluids
  • Experience with developing CFD solvers
  • Experience with turbulence modeling
  • Knowledge and experience with massively-parallel algorithm development and high-performance computing.
  • Experience with verification and validation methods
  • Publications in the areas of CFD development or fluid mechanics.
