Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Reactor Physics Methods and Analysis group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Nuclear Multiphysics Engineer.
Our team works an on-site 9x80 schedule located at our Research and Education Campus with every other Friday off!
Responsibilities Include:
  • Focus on reactor multiphysics calculations, both transient and steady state, for methods validation, workflow development, Monte Carlo analysis and reactor design.
  • Support mission needs for advanced reactor analysis supporting the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, nuclear thermal propulsion analysis and model development supporting NASA, design of a thermal test reactor for construction and operation at INL, model development and validation.
  • Must possess strong background in neutron transport and reactor kinetics with demonstrated experience performing radiation transport analysis using Monte Carlo and deterministic methods to model reactor core behavior, with a focus on transient simulations.
  • Perform work in both reactor physics methods development and applied engineering with respect to a number of advanced reactor systems. Perform as strong asset to an interdisciplinary R&D organization.
  • Develop, implement, verify, validate and maintain efficient numerical methods and/or computational protocols for reactor physics simulations. These methods and/or protocols will be applied to model reactor systems of interest to DOE, NRC, NASA, TTRC and INL.
  • Maintain adequate knowledge of the MOOSE environment to be able to couple reactor physics applications with other applications.
  • Preparation, peer review, and delivery of proposals, program plans, oral presentations and other activities related to development of new INL programs and projects.
  • Lead mentoring and training activities for technical staff across division. Mentoring, and technical supervision of less senior staff members and students.
  • Publish work in various reports as well as in the referred literature including archival journals. Participate in external professional activities such as ANS or other professional societies.


Minimum Requirements:
  • A Ph.D. or an MS and 4 years' experience in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or closely related fields is required.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Practical experience using MOOSE-based multi-physics tools, the Serpent, OpenMC and/or MCNP Monte Carlo codes.
  • Object-oriented computer programming skills (especially C++ and Python) and high performance computing experience.
  • Familiarity with systems code analysis (e.g., RELAP).
