The INL-led Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR) fuel qualification program is looking for a principal investigator (PI) to help lead applied research focused on establishing the performance of tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particle fuel for high-temperature reactors. TRISO post-irradiation examination (PIE) employs a host of experimental techniques to extract information on key areas such as TRISO coating integrity and morphology, fission product transport, and fuel resilience in off-normal conditions such as high temperatures and oxidizing atmospheres. Common methods include gamma spectroscopy, wet chemistry, post-irradiation heating tests in specialized furnaces, optical and electron microscopy, and X-ray computed tomography. The PI will work with other subject matter experts in utilizing these and other methods to comprehensively characterize the fuel and support its qualification with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The PI will help select samples, plan and coordinate experiments, analyze data, and disseminate results in reports and journal articles. Additional functions of the PI will be to evaluate existing processes and suggest improvements or enhancements to those processes or analytical capabilities.
The position requires experience with nuclear fuel systems and materials, irradiation testing, and/or post-irradiation examination focusing on multiple elements of fuel performance.
