Idaho National Laboratory (INL) seeks a University Relations Specialist who can continue to grow, develop and hone meaningful relationships with university researchers.
This is an exciting opportunity for those who are passionate about making connections between university students and faculty with INL researchers that lead to long-term collaborations and relationships. This organization has programmatic responsibility for interns, graduate fellowships, postdoctoral appointments, faculty appointments and academic visitors - all critical elements for building a robust research portfolio. This position will help continue to grow, develop and hone meaningful relationships between INL researchers and university staff, faculty and students.
This position has a variety of tasks and allows for creativity, collaboration and building of high impact programs and relationships. You will be a point of connection/liaison between INL and other research institutions to provide new and diverse opportunities for student interns and graduate fellows to expand their knowledge and impact. You are instrumental in ensuring that the student interns and graduate fellows have a meaningful learning experience at INL by being actively involved in their professional development and fostering a sense of community and inclusion while at INL.
Develop and implement critical initiatives related to national and regional universities to support and enhance INL capabilities. Monitor and report lab and university performance against strategic objectives. Build networks at local, regional and national levels and effectively team with others to optimize contribution to INL. Support INL activities to develop meaningful relationships with national and regional universities, including collaborative research and employee pipeline (student interns, graduate fellowships, postdocs and research employees) and faculty engagement.
This position will be working a hybrid schedule out of our Idaho Falls offices with a comprehensive relocation package provided (if applicable). Our team works a 9x80 schedule with every other Friday off and occasional travel.
Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage all aspects of assigned program including reviewing and interpreting requirements, selecting appropriate partnership model; understand and articulate terms to all relevant parties; advise and provide consultation for all parties and collaborative departments; provide mediation for discussions and remedial actions; and ability to develop solutions for a wide variety of problems ranging from mundane to highly complex.
  • Create and implement professional development seminars and workshops, including leading cohort development activities such as group meetings and individual check-in meetings.
  • The incumbent will be expected to contribute to the identification and creation of program design improvements. Encouraged to develop solutions to problems as they arise. Develop and maintain subject matter expertise and be cognizant of the best industry practice. Develop and implement strategies for the development, management, implementation, and continued improvement of the assigned programs including educational and professional development seminars. Develop and maintain relationships across DOE complex with counterparts. Benchmark programs against industry and DOE complex. Develop and implement competitive advantage for INL programs. Responsible for partnering with colleagues to develop and implement programs, events and educational opportunities for the participants.
  • Represent INL and National University Programs in a professional and collegial manner with key collaborators both within the laboratory and with university personnel.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing meaningful metrics and assessments to ensure that appropriate investments are being made. Responsible for monitoring and providing deliverables as required. Responsible for ensuring programs maintain the highest standards and meet all changing requirements.


Qualifications:

  • Master's degree plus 3-6+ years relevant experience OR
  • Doctorate degree plus 2-4+ years relevant experience
Experience highly desired in the following areas:
  • Prior experience working in Higher Education or a Highly Technical organization
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Working with personnel from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
  • Program/project development and management.
  • Experience in developing internal and external communication materials desirable.
  • Experience in mentoring researchers and/or university students in any capacity also desirable.

  • Salary Grade 190 ($70,680 - $116,616) / 210 ($93,492 - $154,212)
