Responsibilities Include:
The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for a mechanical engineer for the position of Nuclear Research Facility Engineer reporting to the System Engineering Department Manager in the Engineering Division.
INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development, and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.
The Nuclear Research Facility Engineer applies engineering knowledge, practice, and techniques in support of assigned facility systems. Engineer is responsible to ensure continued operational readiness of assigned systems, structures, and components in support of the ongoing research mission at MFC. Engineer has technical understanding of the design requirements, system performance criteria, design, operation, testing, and maintenance of assigned facility systems.
Functions of the position are:
  • Support engineering deliverables associated with designs that may include technical and functional requirements (T&FR), drawings, system design descriptions (SDD), test reports, procurement specifications, statements of work, qualification plans, work control documents, design reports, and engineering change packages
  • Responsible for the operational status and ongoing modification activities for assigned systems
  • Provides support to ensure system configuration is being managed effectively
  • Apply mechanical engineering skills to develop design packages for system modifications and equipment installations. Works with facility management, operations, crafts and contractors to implement the approved designs
  • Participate in the evaluation of system operating conditions and determine actions
  • Supports research processes by designing and modifying facility and research equipment
  • Identify preventative maintenance actions by developing preventative maintenance justifications
  • Identify calibration requirements, specifications, standards, and tolerances
  • Conduct system assessments which include periodic reviews of system operability, reliability, and material condition
  • Participates in the development of configuration management plans for assigned systems


Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and 0-2 years experience or Masters Degree and 0-1 year of experience
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship
Preferred Requirements:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with accurate attention to detail
  • Experience or knowledge of configuration management process of drawings and engineering documentation
Job Information:
  • Salary Grade: 200 ($81,288 - $134,100)/210 ($93,492 - $154,212)
