Designing, administering, and overseeing the region's competitive wholesale electricity markets is a critical function of ISO New England, and t he Market Design Analyst position is on the forefront of this core responsibility. As a Market Design Analyst, your primary responsibility will be to formulate solutions that improve the New England electricity markets, ensuring they function effectively and reliably within the broader regulatory and public policy context.

Market Design Analysts work within a department of analysts and economists. Our team has diverse skills and backgrounds including energy trading and operations, engineering, regulatory affairs, business and data analysis, optimization models, and auction design. We work collaboratively, across our team and company, and with the various companies participating in New England's wholesale electricity markets.


How you will make an impact


Working with multi-departmental project teams, you will:
  • Evaluate problems in market performance or administration, often requiring market rule and technical implementation research and analysis.
  • Devise solution options, often requiring modeling and analysis to evaluate tradeoffs between potential solutions.
  • Propose solution recommendations that consider implementation feasibility, implications on our various stakeholders, as well as general efficacy.
  • Present proposed solutions to our diverse stakeholders, including preparing detailed documentation and presentations.
  • Support the Legal department in filing market rule changes with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), including providing expert witness testimony.
What we are looking for
  • Bachelor or graduate degree in Engineering, Business/Finance/Management Science, Economics, or other related discipline.
  • Experience in the electric power, energy-based commodity trading, energy-centric analysis or consulting.
  • Knowledge of electricity market designs, power system operations, or commercial and regulatory affairs relevant in New England.
  • Experience performing research, analyzing problems, and presenting decision-relevant information concisely.
  • Project leadership, time-management, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
Desired not required
  • Experience using statistical tools, simulation models, and/or database software tools to extract, assemble, and interpret quantitative information.
  • Familiarity with the software systems and tools that ISOs/RTOs use to operate the power system and administer the markets.
