Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) Radiological Control Operations group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Health Physics Technician! This team works an on-site 4x10 schedule located at our facility with every Friday off!
Responsibilities Include:
Apply a thorough knowledge of a wide range of radiological control principles, procedures, requirements, and related instrumentation.
  • Monitor for radiation, contamination & airborne radioactivity in the workplace. Ensure compliance with radiological safety requirements.
  • Issue "stop-work" orders when required.
  • Effectively use and manage work time.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the INL Values to Support safe, sustainable research at the Materials & Fuels Complex;
  • Recommend additional training or changes to radiological control procedures to correct deficiencies;
  • Recommend radiation safety related improvements to work procedures for Operations Research & Development, and Maintenance, or evaluate and provide recommendations on proposed hazard mitigation techniques and controls;
  • Mentor or monitor work of more junior staff and radiological workers;
  • Provide work coverage & oversight for maintenance, operational, & routine work that involves radioactive materials and radiation generating devices.
  • Provide radiological work coverage, radiological work/practices oversight and mentoring, enforce radiological control requirements, and ensure ALARA principles are followed during work and respond to radiological emergencies.
  • Perform required radiological surveys for free release of material al Radiological Buffer Areas and Contamination Areas; personnel surveys for contamination; surveys for contamination control, radiation control, airborne radioactivity control; and surveys to categorize waste for shipment.
  • Document and review when applicable, radiological surveys and radiological information in logs and on survey maps.
  • Maintain proficiency and qualifications in radiation and contamination control through completion of work, self-study, and training activities.
  • Display a basic knowledge of Health Physics theory, work practices, and instrumentation.
  • Provide training and mentoring to junior staff on radiological work coverage and oversight.
  • Assist in writing radiological procedures and provide instruction and guidance to fewer senior technicians.
  • Effective process Laboratory Required Documents, Laboratory Wide Procedures, work rules and safe work practices.


Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Level 2: High School Diploma or equivalent and 18 months experience in radiation protection.
  • Level 3: High School Diploma or equivalent and 36 months experience in radiation protection.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
  • Successful completion of a technical school course (or equivalent) in radiation protection
  • Must either be currently DOE Core qualified or successfully pass the DOE Core exam administered by BEA prior to start date.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain qualification as a MFC Health Physics Technician within 1 year of start date.

  • Salary Grade 180 ($62,640 - $100,224) / Salary Grade 190 ($70,680 - $116,616)

  • TDP: Testing designated position; It will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of employment.
