Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Research and Education Campus (REC) Fabrication Services group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Fabrication Planner! This team works a hybrid 4x10 schedule located across all INL Fabrication Enterprise Locations with every other Friday off. The individual may be required to work special shifts or weekends in support of program or project needs.
Responsibilities Include:
Coordinate across all applicable fields, including fabrication shops, engineering, Quality Assurance, ES&H, scheduling, procurement, subcontractors, and others.
  • Responsible for the planning, assembly, and issuance of fabrication work control documents
  • Work with customers to understand their design requirements and transfer that information into easy-to-follow fabrication steps for the performers (machinists, welders, inspectors, etc.)
  • Provide technical expertise in fabrication processes.
  • Use an in-depth knowledge of manufacturing to plan the fabrication of complex designs.
  • Provide project cost estimating and support in estimating project delivery schedules.
  • Construct the fabrication traveler including all work control documents and assist in coordinating each field throughout the fabrication process.
  • Balance workload with assistance from the local manufacturing team and enterprise scheduler.
  • Responsible for collaborating with all necessary fields, (management, shop personnel, procurement personnel, customers, quality personnel, subcontractors, and others) to ensure fabrication requirements are met.
  • Provides imaginative, thorough, and practical solutions to technical problems, and improvements in fabrication efficiencies. Demonstrates creativity, self-motivation, competence, and mastery of fabrication processes.
  • Review mechanical drawings to determine materials needed and initiate the procurement process for project materials.
  • Prepare and assemble work orders, including detailed work instructions, weld and inspection records, material take-off lists, and other relevant fabrication documents.
  • Participate in tests and evaluations, experiment with new concepts, and recommend design improvements.
  • Collaborate with other organizations including Quality Assurance, Scheduling, and other fields.
  • Work with off-site vendors including creating the contract documents that direct their work.
  • Collaborate with engineering and scientists to review work scope and designs to define job requirements, offer recommendations on fabrication improvement, and establish task priority.
  • Identify requirements for fabricating, assembling, testing, and solving mechanical items, systems, and assemblies.
  • Determine appropriate work location(s), including off-site vendors.
  • Participate in the design process of various programs and projects primarily during the development of mechanical components and systems by attending design reviews and providing input towards improving fabrication.
  • Prepare and submit material orders when the department procurement specialist is overloaded.
  • Provide cost and schedule estimates to customers and management.
  • Provide status on jobs in progress, resolve problems, and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Complete and maintain training and qualification specified for work you're doing.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices in the various work locations.
  • Responsible for their own safety, must be familiar and follow all relevant health and safety requirements.
  • Be knowledgeable of emergency action policies and procedures, methods of reporting and resolving unsafe work practices and conditions and using available cognizant professionals.
  • Must be concerned about safety of co-workers and have no reserves regarding stop work authority.
  • Must actively participate in company safety programs including but not limited to VPP, ALARA, EST etc.


Minimum Requirements:
  • Baccalaureate plus 5 years relevant experience, or Advanced Degree plus 3 years relevant experience, or a minimum of 13 years relevant experience in lieu of degree
  • Experience in Project Management/scheduling (managing project, project teams, initial to project completion)
  • Working in fabrication developing fabrication designs and defining standards.
  • Working in welding defining design elements, requirements, and standards.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and through verbal dialog.
  • Must understand Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Must be able to perform assigned duties with limited oversight from management.
  • Must be capable of satisfactorily completing facility specific, continuous, and professional development training.
  • Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining medical qualifications so as not to limit satisfaction of the minimum requirements defined in this document.
  • Must have expert skills in the fabrication process, must be familiar in the use of all major machine shop equipment including the use and programming of computer numerical control equipment.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
