Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Characterization group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as an Electron Microscopist of Nuclear Materials.
Our team works an on-site 4x10 schedule located at our Materials and Fuels Complex every Friday off!
Responsibilities Include:
The Characterization and Advanced Post Irradiation Examination Division at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants to fill in a position for electron microscopist of nuclear fuel and materials.
INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development, and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.
We are seeking a highly motivated electron microscopist to conduct hands-on research involving the advanced characterization of irradiated materials and nuclear fuels using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Familiarity with characterization of defects, such as dislocation loops, dislocations, cavities is required. Familiarity with ChemiSTEM, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and precession electron diffraction is preferred. The candidate is expected to be a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team and work effectively both alone and as a team member. The candidate must be self-motivated but also take direction from other team members and peers. Function functions of the role are:
  • Perform microstructural characterization of irradiated materials and nuclear fuels to support a variety of programmatic works
  • Operate and maintain the Thermo Scientific Talos F200X G2 TEM
  • Assist internal and external researchers in collecting and analyzing microstructural characterization data
  • Summarize and publicize research accomplishments through technical reports, peer reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences
  • Prepare, submit, and be awarded original research grants to internal and external funding sources
  • Interacts with other subject areas, project support groups, subcontractors, vendors, and clients as appropriate on an assigned projects to achieve successful outcomes
  • Provides imaginative, thorough scientific solutions to a wide range of complex, ambiguous, and/or difficult problems in the area of materials sciences and nuclear fuels


Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelors Degree and 5 years relevant experience, OR Masters Degree and 3 years relevant experience, OR PhD and 2 years relevant experience
  • Demonstrated expertise (through peer reviewed journals or technical reports) in defects analysis of materials using TEM and STEM techniques
  • Ability to be a strong standout colleague and effectively organize and lead tasks
  • Demonstrated oral and published written communication in skills in English language
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship
Preferred Requirements:
  • Doctoral degree in Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering or closely aligned field from an accredited college or university and 2 years experience
  • Experience with zirconium alloy materials characterization is preferred
Job Information
  • Salary Grade 220 ($104,688 - $172,668)
