The Department of Digital Sciences and Engineering at Idaho National Laboratory is seeking an eager, early career data scientist for the emerging Digital Twin Analytics team! We work closely with our research customers in the Department of Defense and Department of Energy to create groundbreaking technologies for our country's most difficult problems for complex energy systems and advanced materials and manufacturing using explainable AI/ML, physics-informed ML, process-informed ML, and hybrid computational architectures (cloud, on-premises, edge-based), and data / sensor fusion methodologies. This team works a remote 9x80 schedule with every other Friday off.
The Department is an international leader in the application of scientific methods, techniques, and tools to address the performance and operational challenges of mission-critical industries. The Department employs specialized methods and state-of-the-art data analysis and modeling tools to support the INL's mission by ensuring the nation's safe, competitive, and sustainable use of engineered systems in many domains by applying our capabilities to impactful issues in risk, reliability, and operational performance.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Support the Department and INL in research and development activities.
  • Demonstrate effective research skills and the ability to collaborate and partner with other government agencies, academia, and private sector companies to achieve project objectives.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers on challenging work scope.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with management, co-workers, and with customers.
  • Publish results of research and development in a mix of refereed publications and conference proceedings.
  • Work effectively with other research teams to develop and manage cross-cutting technical programs for a variety of customers.
  • Develop a reputation for technical expertise.
  • Apply and interprets standard theories, principles, methods, concepts, tools, and technologies within specialty.
  • Work to develop technical expertise, knowledge, and new skills.
  • Complete small to medium size assignments of low to moderate complexity.
  • Makes preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives. Participates in peer review work of others.
  • Deliver products that meet or exceed customer technical and quality requirements while meeting schedule and budget constraints.
  • Work with more experience team members to appropriately scope, estimate and schedule projects and tasks. Provides status on work in a timely manner
  • Participate in professional activities, university interactions, special assignments, and external special interest groups.
  • Take initiative to participate in establishing organizational goals and direction and reviews plans.
  • Contribute to development of new capabilities within the division.
  • Contribute to scientific and technical products such as patents, software, journal papers, reports, proceedings, and policies.
  • Contribute to the development of intellectual property leading to patents, publications, and/or copyrights.
  • Actively team with others to acquire funding (preferably external and directly supporting the technical mission of INL) for self through proposals, white papers, AOPs, networking and other methods.
Minimum Requirements:
  • MS and 2 years of experience in data science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, autonomy, artificial intelligence, or related technical fields.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
  • Demonstrated ability with data science platforms and software (e.g., Jupyter Notebook, Databricks, R, Python, MATLAB, SAS, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to understand data structures
  • Demonstrated experience in data science, data analysis, and software development
  • Strong understanding of the mathematical concepts of statistics, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence
  • Demonstrated ability to apply appropriate data science to other domain sciences
  • Strong demonstrated communications skills and experience presenting to partners and customers
  • Must be a self-starter, with a focus on continuous learning; and enjoys collaborating to discovery innovative ways to solve challenges
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to and working within teams within the boundaries of strong project and program management methodologies.
  • Personable, detailed oriented, and experience in working with management and technical personnel at all levels.

  • Salary Grade 210 ($91,032 - $150,156)
