Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Model Based Design group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Digital Engineering Scientist! This group oversees and leads the research, design, and engineering associated with MBSE, CAD, BIM, cloud-based architectures, and simulation for next generation nuclear energy, renewable energy, and defense systems. This team works a remote or hybrid 9x80 schedule located at our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off!
Responsibilities Include:
  • Provide technical and strategic support for model-based systems engineering (MBSE), computer aided design (CAD), building information management (BIM), and software systems architecture and development within the model-based design group.
  • Design, model/simulate, develop, and analyze model-based approaches to meet mission needs across the energy frontier.
  • Participate in a fast-paced development team, will be able to come up to speed quickly with little technical assistance, and will work on a variety of both hardware and software systems/capabilities.
  • Independently complete medium size assignments of moderate to challenging complexity.
  • Make preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives. Participate in peer review work of others.
  • Develop a reputation for technical expertise. Apply and interpret standard theories, principles, methods, concepts, tools, and technologies within specialty. Works to develop technical expertise, knowledge, and new skills.
  • Network effectively with technical peer group within INL and develops external network.
  • Participate in professional activities, university interactions, special assignments, and external special interest groups. Takes initiative to participate in establishing organizational goals and direction and reviews plans.
  • Contribute to development of new capabilities within the division.
  • Contribute to scientific and technical products such as patents, software, journal papers, reports, proceedings, and policies.
  • Contributes to the development of intellectual property leading to patents, publications, and/or copyrights.
  • Actively teams with others to acquire funding (preferably external and directly supporting the technical mission of INL) for self through proposals, white papers, AOPs, networking and other methods.
  • Generate ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities
  • Lead by example, promotes a culture of excellence in safety, environmental compliance, and security.
  • Identify training requirements for self and keeps training current.
  • Deliver products that meet or exceed customer technical and quality requirements while meeting schedule and budget constraints.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or other relevant field.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy ""Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
  • Capable of building system architectures using a model-based paradigm, defining interfaces and dependencies, and developing simulations to validate design concepts
  • Capable of using multiple computer languages. Examples include JavaScript, CSS, HTML5, Node.JS, RUST, Python, SQL, XML, Vue.js, React.js,
  • Work in a fast-paced team environment and participate in weekly stand up, planning, and strategy meetings using tasking tools such as Jira, Teams, or TFS
  • Develop user stories, estimates, code reviews, unit tests, integration testing and support user acceptance testing.
  • Must maintain software configuration management within an agile development environment.
  • Must be familiar with object-oriented paradigm, design patterns and proper class design
  • Experience with relational database design and querying concepts. Examples include Postgres, GraphQL, MS SQL Server
  • Ability to develop, test, and deploy custom software applications using existing or emerging technologies
  • Ability to apply principles, theories, and concepts to develop, deploy, and support innovative technical solutions.
  • Ability to apply software engineering principles, theories and concepts to complex processes and business solutions.
Job Information
  • Salary Grade 210 ($91,032 - $150,156) / Salary Grade 220 ($104,688 - $172,668)
